Keeping Flowers Fresh After Delivery: Do’s and Don’ts

Keeping Flowers Fresh After Delivery: Do’s and Don’ts

What to Do After Receiving Fresh Flowers

Do’s for taking care of freshly delivered flowers:

  • Trim the stems at an angle using a sharp knife or scissors
  • Place your flowers in a vase with room-temperature water
  • Change the water and trim the stems at least every 3 days
  • Soap and rinse the vase whenever you change the water
  • Remove wilting leaves, stalks, and flower blooms regularly

What Not to Do After Receiving Fresh Flowers

Don’ts for taking care of freshly delivered flowers:

  • Don’t allow leaves (attached or fallen) to be under the water
  • Don’t place the flower vase near ripening fruit or vegetables
  • Don’t give your flowers prolonged exposure to direct sunlight

Flower Food or Flower Preserver? Do You Need It?

Not necessarily. But if you want your flowers to really last without much maintenance, then you should consider getting a flower food packet or making your own.

Simple DIY Flower Food Recipe:

  • 1 to 3 teaspoons of sugar (preferably granulated)
  • 1 to 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tablet of crushed aspirin or 1 teaspoon of bleach

Taking Care of Specific Flowers After Delivery

Chrysanthemums require more water than usual. Like most freshly delivered flowers, the water can’t be too cold or warm. Check for signs of aphids at least every other day.

Roses should be placed in a clean, tall vase. Soaking and rinsing the vase often and using clean tools for cutting and watering is vital to caring for roses.

Carnations need their stems trimmed shortly after you receive them since they are highly prone to stem rot. Also, take care not to add too much water to the vase.

Keeping delivered flowers alive is relatively simple. Angle-cut stems, clean water, and a good location are all you generally need to ensure your flowers last.

What’s trickier is how to reciprocate the sender’s intentions. A fuss-free way to do this is to have fresh flowers delivered to them sometime after you receive yours.

Whether you wish the sender happiness, return their affection, or express gratitude, you can find the perfect way to let them know how you feel with our flowers.
